Microdermabrasion has been a large part of the skincare community for the past 40 years. It is a standard skincare procedure that uses a pen-like stylus attached to the tubing to remove and collect dead skin cells. This device has an abrasive diamond tip with a vacuum in the middle to do so. You can use it all over the face to suck away dead skin cells and exfoliate the surface. In addition to the face, you can perform microdermabrasion on:
- Chest
- Back
- KP on arms
- And more
Microdermabrasion is a minimally invasive skin care procedure with ample benefits for your skin. It is often done in conjunction with a chemical peel and is less expensive than a skincare treatment like Hydrafacial, depending on your skincare goals and skin type. Some benefits include:
- Smoothes skin
- Helps other skincare procedures penetrate deeper, such as a chemical peel
- Promotes new skin cell growth
- Reduces fine lines and wrinkles
- Treats dark spots
- Stimulates collagen production
- And more

To perform professional services, you must be a licensed aesthetician. Training on the proper techniques, knowing how to use the device, being aware of health and safety, and properly assessing clients are all essential to performing the procedure properly.
Licensed aestheticians and those explicitly trained in microdermabrasion techniques and equipment are recommended. Fortunately, microdermabrasion is considered an essential skill at Spectrum Advanced Aesthetics. We currently offer this course as part of our Clinical Master Standard Aesthetics program. This program ensures you have the knowledge and hands-on experience to provide microdermabrasion services and over 15 additional specific skincare services for estheticians.

Why Is It Best To Have a Certified Esthetician Perform Microdermabrasion?
Proper technique is essential when performing microdermabrasion services. A properly trained person must also assess the client's skin to ensure they are a good candidate. This background is necessary to ensure the client's safety and provide a good customer experience.
For example, you never want to remove too much of the skin layers, as this can cause irritation or leave it vulnerable to reactions to other products or services, such as a chemical peel.
Microdermabrasion is a program part of the Clinical Master Standard Aesthetics at our Portland esthetician school. This course covers assessments, skin preparation, treatment, aftercare, and machine maintenance, all of which are important for running a successful and safe microdermabrasion service.

Skin Assessment/Consultation
Before providing microdermabrasion services to a client, it is essential that they first receive a skin assessment. By giving a skin assessment, you can:
- Determine the skin type
- Convey confidence in your abilities as an esthetician
- Identify problem areas of the skin
- Customize product recommendations
- Track treatment progress
- Refer to medical professionals when necessary
By having a more profound knowledge of your client's skin, you can determine if they are eligible for treatment or if you need to adjust products. Microdermabrasion is not suitable for all skin types. Some factors that may make some ineligible for microdermabrasion are:
- Frequent skin rashes, open wounds/broken skin, or cold sores
- Moles, freckles, growths, skin tags that change or bleed
- Acne
- Certain skin conditions, such as eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea
- Broken capillaries
- Taking certain medications such as Accutane
- Those with uncontrolled diabetes
Skin Preparation and Cleansing
Before starting the procedure, it is important to clear the skin of all makeup, oils, or buildup. Use a gentle cleanser to remove any remaining impurities. Knowledge of the skin’s pH balance can ensure the skin is cleaned and not irritated before the procedure begins. A background in these details will set you apart as a microdermabrasion professional.

Performing the Treatment
Because the treatment is minimally invasive, it does not require anesthesia or numbing cream. During the procedure, you gently control the device over the client’s skin to exfoliate the dead skin cells.
In the Clinical Master Standard Aesthetics program, we will show you how to properly maneuver the device to control the suction and avoid over-exfoliating the skin. The most crucial consideration while performing the procedure is avoiding irritation and discomfort. Many clients enjoy seeing the procedure results with their glowing skin and the amount of dead skin cells removed from their skin.
Aftercare
Results are noticeable after most procedures, but ensuring the skin heals, stays fresh, and has a glowing look is important.
After the skin is exfoliated from the procedure, it is important to treat the skin with a hydrating moisturizer. By doing so, you can:
- Reduce redness
- Reduce irritation
- Provide specific vitamins or nutrients directly to the skin
Some popular products include aloe vera, hyaluronic acid, antioxidants, ceramides, and glycerin.
In addition to post-treatment skin hydration, it is recommended that clients be advised on aftercare procedures for their safety. Some recommendations to assist in longer results are:
- Avoiding the sun
- Drinking lots of water
- Avoiding harsh washes
- Avoid picking at the face
- Keeping the face cool
Machine Maintenance and Cleaning
When the microdermabrasion appointment is complete, the proper steps must be taken for cleanliness and sanitation. You should:
- Clean dead skin out of the device
- Clean the tip with warm water and soap
- Disinfect the tip with approved solutions
- Air dry the equipment
If the tip is no longer functioning well, you can replace it as needed. Additionally, it is important to ensure the device is still working correctly and replace it if needed.
