Dermaplaning, also known as dermablading, is a procedure that resurfaces, exfoliates, and rejuvenates the skin. During a dermaplaning session a sterile, single-use #10 scalpel is used to remove fine hairs (vellus hairs) and a very thin layer of skin (the stratum corneum) from areas of the skin or the entire face. 

This process is similar to shaving your face with a razor at home. However, dermaplaning goes a little deeper. 

The top layer of the skin is continually exposed to UV rays, environmental toxins, and irritants that may make it look dull. Dermaplaning removes up to two to three weeks' worth of dead skin cells, oils, and contaminants promoting cellular turnover, collagen production, and enhanced product absorption to keep skin looking healthy, glowing, and smooth.  

Dermaplaning can be done on various skin types, in combination with other treatments or alone. It may be performed dry or with oil (sometimes referred to as oilplaning).

Oregon requires a 6-hour education and training program to become dermaplaning certified. You must be a licensed esthetician or a student currently enrolled in an esthetician program before you can take the course. 

Courses may be taken online or in person, but at least two hours of the program must include practical, hands-on training. The course must be attained through schools, institutions, vendors, manufacturers, formal seminars, an esthetician experienced in dermaplaning, or a licensed healthcare provider experienced in dermaplaning.

The exfoliative effects of dermaplaning can increase skin cell turnover, which may help treat skin tone issues like hyperpigmentation. By deeply exfoliating the skin and removing old skin cells, the body is triggered to produce a new range of skin cells so that cells with increased pigment are replaced with new cells. 

Hyperpigmentation occurs when the skin produces uneven amounts of melanin, causing dark spots or patches. Forms of hyperpigmentation include:
